Atlanta Braves' infielder Yunel Escobar made his major league debut in 2007. The 25-year old from Havana, Cuba proved to be a big piece of the Braves' puzzle. Their star shortstop Edgar Renteria seemed to have problem staying healthy for much of the second half, and Escobar filled in nicely in the 53 games at short. In his rookie season, this 2005 second-round draft pick hit .326 with five home runs and a .385 on-base percentage. But his defense was the Braves' biggest asset - sporting a nice .977 fielding percentage, making only four errors in those 53 games at short.
The Braves were anxious to have Escobar make his debut, and it couldn't have come at a better time, with Renteria consistently on the shelf. 2008 will be Escobar's first full season in the bigs, and the Braves seem to have confidence in the youngster, as they recently traded Renteria to the Detroit Tigers for a couple of rookie pitchers.
