Faster Than a Speeding Bullet!

At one point, Jose Reyes was the fastest man in the Mets' organization. But there are two outfielders in their squad that have been deemed faster than the Mets' leadoff man. Their names: Carlos Gomez and Fernando Martinez.

Gomez made his major league debut in 2007, and was very impressive. Gomez, who will turn 22 in December, did not necessarily have the statistics to warrant such high praise; but what he does and will continue to do for the Mets in years to come can not be read on a stats sheet. His speed and fielding ability alone are enough to give this kid a chance on the everyday roster. In three minor league seasons, according to baseballreference.com, Gomez accumulated 141 stolen bases, and was only caught 39 times!

Martinez is only 19 years old, and will soon make his mark in the big leagues. He is reportedly faster than Gomez who is reportedly faster than Reyes. The current projected starting outfield for the Mets in 2008 looks like the 42-year old Moises Alou in left, oft-injured Carlos Beltran in center, and a platoon between youngster Lastings Milledge and veteran Shawn Green in right.

But by the end of 2008, as the Mets enter their new stadium in 2009, the outfield could look like: Gomez, Beltran, Martinez - which could certainly be the fastest outfield in the major leagues!
