I've had fellow Met fans ask me, "Who is Willie Collazo? Where did he come from, and what good will he do the team?" Well, what he will do for the team remains to be seen. But here's an introduction to the 28-year-old rookie.
Collazo is a left-handed pitcher from Puerto Rico. According to MLB.com, after graduating from his Puerto Rican high school in 1997, he attended Iowa's Kirkwood Community College from 1997-99. There, he was a baseball First-Team All-American. He eventually attended Florida International University from 2000-2001.
He made his major league debut on September 5, against the Reds in Cincinnati. He pitched an inning and two-thirds of shut-out ball, giving up two hits and one walk. He pitched in last night's ballgame, allowing one hit and no runs in one inning pitched.
According to baseballreference.com, Collazo went 6-5 with a 2.46 ERA, four saves, and 69 strikeouts in 53 games (four starts) spanning 98.2 innings pitched in 2007 for the Mets' AAA affiliate, the New Orleans Zephyrs of the Pacific Coast League.
