Clay "No-no" Buchholz

On Saturday, September 1st, 2007, the Boston Red Sox took care of those Orioles from Baltimore. The box score for the Sox, 10 runs, 14 hits, 0 errors. For O's, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 errors. That's right - Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz no-hit the Orioles in his second career Major League start.

Buchholz became the third pitcher in since 1900 to throw a no-hitter in his first or second major league start. According to MLB.com, "legend" Bobo Holloman of the 1953 St. Louis Browns threw a no-no in his first major league start. In 1991, Wilson Alvarez of the Chicago White Sox completed the task in his second career start.

But, in an effort to keep this top pitching prospect healthy, the BoSox are going to limit the youngster's outings for the remainder of the 2007 season. This is obviously a big blow to any of you fantasy owners who picked up Buchholz for the final month of the season. However, if you happened to have had him in your starting lineup for last night's game, you picked up a "W". Buchholz came out of the bullpen for the Sox can wound up with a win! The kid is now 3-0 on the year.

Right now, there seems to be a 50-50 chance that Buchholz will be on the roster for the Red Sox if/when they make the playoffs. On one hand, the experience of the playoffs would be HUGE for the young phenom. But on the other hand, do the Red Sox really feel it's necessary to risk the golden arm of the 23-year-old? Only time will tell.
